The mission of Crime Stoppers is to partner with law enforcement, the media, and the community to help solve and prevent crime. It is an avenue for citizens to get information to law enforcement anonymously. We work diligently to educate, engage, and empower citizens in the efforts of solving and preventing crime. In addition, we highlight unsolved cases on television, radio, and social media in the hopes that someone will come forward with an anonymous tip to help solve these cases. If that information helps lead to an arrest, tipsters are eligible for a cash reward. When the community understands and uses the Crime Stoppers program, it will help build trust between the residents and law enforcement. Crime Stoppers assists in solving and preventing crime, which in turn helps save the police money.
Crime Stoppers is based on the principle that someone, other than just the criminal, has information that can help solve a crime. It was created to combat the three major problems that impede law enforcement in generating information to help solve crime:
fear of REPRISAL,
an attitude of APATHY, and
RELUCTANCE to get involved.
Crime Stoppers confronts these problems by:
offering ANONYMITY to the people who provide the information and
paying REWARDS when the information supplied leads to an arrest.
Since the CS revitalization in Flint & Genesee County in January 2014, Crime Stoppers has processed more than 1700 tips -131 of those tips helped law enforcement make arrests, and more than $58,000 has been awarded to tipsters for crimes that occurred in Flint & Genesee County. Homicide, Hit-and-Run, Assault with Intent to Murder, Armed Robbery, Arson, Narcotics and Fugitives Arrested are some of the crimes that have been solved with the assistance of Crime Stoppers.
Crime Stoppers receives NO federal, state, or local government funding. The program is funded by donations from the private sector and corporate community. Funding is needed for cash rewards paid to tipsters, services provided to law enforcement, and marketing materials essential for community events, as well as the necessary expenses of running the organization.
Crime Stoppers is a 501c3, non-profit organization and 100% of donations come from individuals and companies sharing our common goal - to help make the community of Flint and Genesee County a safer place to live, work, and play. Donations are tax deductible and Corporate Sponsors are recognized at community events attended by Crime Stoppers.
